What is Pupillary Distance (PD) and how can I measure it if it is not provided with my prescription?
Your PD (pupillary distance) is the distance between your two pupils, expressed in millimeters. Sometimes the doctor will write two values (for each eye) or one value (for both eyes).
We need this measurement because it helps us position your lens prescription's focus in the right place for your frames.
Below is an example image of a PD measurement:

If your doctor did not include a PD measurement in your prescription, please feel free to use our online PD measurement tool to measure your PD found in our prescription page.
If you are not comfortable with using our guide, you can reach out to your doctor to take your measurement.
You can also head to the nearest JINS, where our trained opticians will gladly take a measurement for you.

Currently, we are able to fill prescriptions with a sphere (SPH) measurement of less than -15.00.
For certain products:

Order will be cancelled and customer will be notified via email if a prescription is out of manufacturing range.

Eye prescription validity can vary by country and the individual's eye health, but typically, an eyeglass prescription lasts for 1 to 2 years from the date of the exam. The expiration of an eye prescription is based on several factors:
-
Changes in Vision: The human eye can change over time due to factors such as aging, health conditions, or natural progression of visual acuity. Regular check-ups ensure that your prescription matches your current vision needs.
-
Eye Health Monitoring: Regular eye exams are crucial for detecting eye diseases and conditions at an early stage, even if you haven't noticed any changes in your vision. Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, develop gradually without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.
-
Legal and Safety Reasons: The expiration of prescriptions is also a regulatory measure designed to ensure patients undergo regular eye examinations, which can prevent the use of outdated prescriptions that might no longer be effective or safe.
-
Accuracy of Correction: An up-to-date prescription ensures that corrective lenses (eyeglasses or contacts) are effectively correcting vision to the best possible level, enhancing both the quality of life and safety (e.g., while driving).
The expiration period for an eye prescription encourages regular eye examinations, ensuring that individuals receive appropriate vision correction and maintain optimal eye health. Always consult with your eye care provider to understand how often you should be examined and to keep your prescriptions up-to-date.

We display the Prop 65 warning because of the Bisphenol-A (BpA) found in polycarbonate lenses and some of our frame materials.
California Proposition 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was created to protect California’s drinking water from contamination. California publishes a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm, which is updated once a year. Recently, a chemical known as bisphenol A, BpA, was added to this list. BpA as many of you know, is found almost everywhere – food containers, compact discs and DVDs, bicycle helmets and electronic equipment. With only trace amounts of BpA detected in a polycarbonate lens and plastic eye wear frame, how much exposure are you really getting? The studies have shown that most exposure to BpA is largely ingested and that any exposure through skin contact is negligible.
Click here for more information about Proposition 65.

With so many variables to consider, it can feel impossible to pick the right glasses for your face. Thankfully, we're here to help. This guide will discuss how your glasses should fit, what criteria to consider, and what types of glasses best fit which face shapes.
FACE SHAPES:

Nothing is more important than choosing glasses that compliment your face shape. Each face fits into one of four categories: Oval, Round, Square, or Heart. The easiest way to find your face shape is to look into a mirror and trace your face, but if you're having trouble you can always ask a friend for a second opinion!
OVAL FACE SHAPE:

Oval faces are longer, narrower, and usually have a rounded chin. Oval faces are fairly universal, but someone with an oval face may prefer a slightly wider frame in order to complement their face.
ROUND FACE SHAPE:

Round faces are widest in the cheekbones and are as long as they are wide. Round faces can benefit from styles with sharper edges, such as Squares or Wellingtons. Someone with a rounder face should try frames with contrasting, angular shapes.
SQUARE FACE SHAPE:

Square faces are wider than average with stronger, flatter jawlines. Since these faces have sharp edges, people with square faces should try a frame with softer features.
HEART FACE SHAPE:

Heart faces have wider foreheads, smaller chins, and high cheekbones. To offset a narrower chin, try frames with a wider length such as oval-shaped or heart shaped.
Questions? Please contact us!
To ensure maximum comfort and the best possible visual alignment, we offer three distinct fitment options tailored to different facial structures.
1. Standard Fit
This is the industry-standard fit found across most retailers. It is ideal for individuals with higher or more prominent nose bridges, providing a secure and balanced feel.
2. Low Bridge Fit
Also known as Asian Fit or Global Fit, these frames are specifically designed for individuals with lower nose bridges. They feature larger, specialized nose pads to:
-
Prevent the frames from sliding down the nose.
-
Keep the glasses from resting too low on the face or touching the cheeks.
3. Adjustable Fit
Designed for versatility, these frames feature straight temple arms and a fixed nose bridge. While they are a comfortable solution for a wide range of face shapes, they may not be suitable for everyone.
Selecting Your Fit: If you typically find that glasses slide down your nose or rest on your cheeks, we recommend exploring our Low Bridge Fit collection. For most other wearers, the Standard Fit remains the most common choice.

-5.00 --> higher = 1.67 HIGH-INDEX PLASTIC

When you get a new pair of glasses, you're probably excited to try them on and check out your new look. But, like many people, you might find yourself asking, “Why do my new glasses make me dizzy?”
It can take a few days or weeks to get used to new glasses, especially when you have a new prescription. A significant change in prescription or switch to bifocals or progressive lenses can mean a longer adjustment period. In some cases, this can cause more discomfort while your eyes get used to your new specs. However, after you adapt, you'll be able to wear your new glasses without any trouble and look stylish while correcting your vision.
Adjusting to glasses can cause a range of symptoms, which vary based on your prescription. Some of the most common complaints include:
- Headache
- Eye strain
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Blurriness
- Distortion (more common in high-index lenses for farsightedness)
- Fishbowl effect (more common for high-index lenses for nearsightedness) in which the edges of your field of vision appear curved or bent
- Problems with depth perception
New prescriptions can lead to sensations of dizziness, nausea, or headaches as the brain adapts to enhanced depth perception and clearer vision. he adaptation process may be influenced by changes in frame size or shape, potentially impacting how the glasses feel or affect your vision. While many individuals adjust to their new glasses quickly, persistent symptoms after a week warrant a consultation with an optometrist. For a smoother transition, consistently wear your new glasses from morning, allowing your eyes and brain to adapt more comfortably to the changes. If these problems are intense or extend beyond a couple of weeks, it’s advisable to have your prescription reevaluated by an eye care professional.

Wearing our JINS SCREEN (blue light) lenses for everyday use is generally considered safe and can be beneficial for reducing eye strain and discomfort, particularly for individuals who spend extended periods in front of digital screens. Blue light lenses are designed to filter out a portion of the high-energy blue light emitted by electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets.
However, it's essential to consider a few factors:
1) Comfort and Clarity: Some people may find wearing blue light lenses all day uncomfortable or may experience visual distortion. If you notice any discomfort or changes in vision clarity, it's advisable to consult an eye care professional.
2) Balanced Protection: While blue light lenses can be beneficial, they should not replace other good eye care practices, such as taking regular breaks from screen time, practicing the 20-20-20 rule (looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes), and maintaining proper lighting and ergonomics in your workspace.
3) Personal Preference: Ultimately, whether wearing blue light lenses all day is suitable for you depends on your individual needs, preferences, and comfort level. Some people may prefer to wear them consistently, while others may choose to wear them only during specific activities or times of the day.
If you have any concerns about using blue light lenses or experience any discomfort while wearing them, it's best to consult with an eye care professional who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
You can find more details about our JINS SCREEN lenses here.

The frequency of eye exams can vary based on age, health, and risk factors for eye diseases. Here's a general guideline:
-
Children: It's recommended that children have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age, another exam at age 3, and again at the start of school. School-aged children should have an eye exam at least every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or as recommended by their eye doctor.
-
Adults (ages 18 to 60): Adults should have a comprehensive eye exam at least every two years. However, those who require vision correction or have a risk for eye diseases may need more frequent exams.
-
Seniors (age 61 and older): Seniors should have an annual eye exam to check for age-related eye problems like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts.
These are general recommendations. Individuals with specific risk factors such as diabetes, a history of eye diseases in the family, or those who have experienced eye injuries may need more frequent eye exams. It's important to follow the advice of your eye care professional regarding how often you should have an eye exam.

Progressives are only available in-store at this time.
Progressive lenses, often referred to as "multifocals," provide a sophisticated solution for those who require correction for multiple viewing distances within a single pair of eyewear.
The Progressive Advantage
Unlike traditional bifocals or trifocals, which feature distinct viewing zones separated by visible lines, progressive lenses offer a seamless transition between prescriptions. This technology allows for clear vision across three primary fields:
-
Distance Vision: For driving, walking, and far-off objects.
-
Intermediate Vision: Optimized for computer use and dashboard viewing.
-
Near Vision: Specifically for reading and close-up tasks.
Progressive vs. Bifocal Lenses
| Feature | Progressive Lenses | Traditional Bifocals |
| Appearance | Seamless, no visible lines. | Divided by a visible line. |
| Vision Ranges | Corrects distance, intermediate, and near. | Corrects distance and near only. |
| User Experience | Smooth transition between focal points. | Abrupt "jump" when switching focus. |
Why Choose Progressives?
Progressive lenses eliminate the inconvenience of switching between different pairs of glasses for various tasks. They provide a more natural viewing experience and a modern, aesthetic appearance by removing the visible lines associated with older lens technologies.
Note: If you are transitioning to progressive lenses for the first time, your eyes may require a brief adaptation period to get used to the seamless focal zones.
Check your prescription to see if there is an ADD power. If there is no ADD power, then you do not need progressives.

Astigmatism is a common eye condition that happens when the cornea or lens of your eye isn't perfectly round. This tiny difference in shape means that light doesn’t focus as it should on the back of your eye, making things look blurred or wavy at any distance. It’s like a camera that can't quite get the focus right.
One of the main challenges for those with astigmatism is driving at night. In low light conditions, focusing on objects becomes more difficult, and the glare from various light sources can worsen the blurriness and distortion associated with astigmatism. The more lights there are on the road, such as headlights, taillights, streetlights, and illuminated signs, the more pronounced the blurring of vision due to glare overload. Consequently, people with astigmatism might struggle with judging distances, seeing clearly in their peripheral vision, and navigating through dimly lit areas.
Here is an image that compares normal vision with how vision might be affected by astigmatism during a night scene. The left side shows a clear view of a street with streetlights, while the right side demonstrates the blurring and distortion typical of astigmatism, especially noticeable with the lights. The severity depends on your astigmatism.

High index lenses, with a refractive index between 1.59 and 1.74, offer a more effective solution for vision correction than standard lenses due to their ability to bend light more efficiently. These lenses address vision problems caused by the misalignment of the eye's natural lenses, which leads to blurred vision, by altering the light's path to ensure focused and clear vision. Their superior light-bending capability allows for a design that is both thinner and lighter, making them especially suitable for individuals with strong prescriptions, as they provide enhanced comfort and aesthetic appeal without sacrificing visual clarity.
Here are 5 signs that you stand to benefit from making the upgrade to high index lenses:
1) You Have a Strong Prescription. High index lenses are especially beneficial for those with strong prescriptions, as they can greatly reduce lens thickness, often by more than half compared to standard lenses. They are not exclusive to high prescriptions and may also benefit conditions like astigmatism, regardless of prescription strength. It's important to consult an eye care professional to determine the most suitable lens type for your specific vision needs. For more information about all the types of lenses you can choose from, check out the JINS lens guide.
2) You're Tired Of Wearing Heavy Glasses That Won't Stay Put. If your glasses often slip down your nose, consider lighter lenses and check the fit of your frames first, as improper fit can cause slipping. If problems persist despite a good fit, high index lenses may help, and choosing frames made from lightweight materials can enhance comfort.
3) You're Frustrated By The "Bug-Eye" Effect. People often desire to look and feel good with their eyewear. Thick lenses can create an undesirable bug-eyed look due to their curvature, but high index lenses, with their aspheric design, are thinner at the center, avoiding this issue. If you're bothered by the bug-eyed effect from thick lenses, switching to high index lenses can offer a more flattering appearance.
4) You Want More Choices In Frames. Finding the perfect eyeglass frames can be challenging when your prescription requires thick lenses, which may not fit well or look good, especially in slender, metal frames. High index lenses, being thinner and lighter, can solve this by fitting into a broader range of frame styles, giving you more flexibility and the ability to choose the frames you truly want.
5) You're Dealing With Unexplained Eye Strains. Correct prescription glasses can still cause eye strain as they alter light focus, leading to fatigue with constant use. High-index lenses, suitable for strong prescriptions, may lessen this strain by more evenly distributing light, helpful for light-sensitive eyes. If experiencing eye strain, consult an eye doctor to exclude other causes, and consider high-index lenses for potential relief.

Prism lenses are special glasses that help fix issues with how eyes line up and work together. They work by bending the light that comes into the eyes, making sure it hits the right spot on the back of the eye. This helps correct problems like double vision or eyes that don't point in the same direction. These lenses make it easier for people to see clearly without straining their eyes or tilting their head in uncomfortable ways, improving both comfort and clarity of vision.
Imagine someone who sees double images when they try to focus on objects either near or far. This might happen because their eyes aren't aligning correctly—a condition called strabismus, where one eye may drift inward, outward, upward, or downward relative to the other eye. In such a case, the person might be prescribed glasses with prism lenses.
The lenses would be crafted with a specific orientation and strength of prism, depending on the direction and severity of the eye misalignment. For instance, if a person's right eye tends to drift outward, the prism in the lens for that eye would be positioned to bend light inward towards the nose, helping to realign the image with the left eye's view.
The result is that when they wear their glasses, the images from each eye are adjusted to overlap correctly, eliminating the double vision and allowing them to see a single, clear image. This can significantly improve their daily activities like reading, driving, or working on a computer.
Here's what it looks like in a prescription:
Prism: The measurement of prism correction is expressed in diopters, ranging from 0.5PD upwards (e.g., 1.0PD, 1.5PD). This measurement indicates the degree of eye misalignment that needs correction. If a high level of correction is needed, it can be divided between both eyes since proper alignment involves both.
Base: The placement of the prism in your lenses depends on the nature of your double vision. It can be positioned vertically or horizontally, either in one or both lenses. Placement options include the outer edge of the lens (Base Out, BO), the inner edge (Base In, BI), the top (Base Up, BU), or the bottom (Base Down, BD).

Polycarbonate lenses are a type of eyeglass lens material that is known for its durability, safety, and clarity. They were originally developed for use in aerospace applications and have since become popular for eyewear due to their robust properties. Here are the key features and benefits of polycarbonate lenses:
Impact Resistance: Polycarbonate lenses are up to 10 times more impact-resistant than plastic or glass lenses. This makes them an ideal choice for safety glasses, sports eyewear, and children's glasses, as they are less likely to shatter upon impact.
UV Protection: These lenses inherently provide protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This makes them beneficial for both indoor and outdoor use, protecting eyes from the potential damage caused by UV light.
Lightweight: Polycarbonate lenses are thinner and lighter than traditional plastic lenses, which enhances comfort, especially for those who wear glasses for extended periods.
Optical Clarity: While slightly less optically clear than the highest quality glass or high-index lenses, polycarbonate lenses still provide excellent clarity for the majority of prescriptions and are suitable for most users.
Due to these properties, polycarbonate lenses are particularly recommended for individuals who are involved in high-impact activities or require extra protection for their eyes, making them a versatile and practical choice in various eyewear applications.
Polycarbonate lenses are available upon special request.
