Vision is our most important sense, and there is not much worse than watching your eyesight deteriorate over time. Thankfully, there are several tactics that you can use to not only maintain your quality of vision but to actually improve it. We will tell you how to improve your eyesight and how to treat your eyes properly.

1. FILTER OUT BLUE LIGHT

Blue light, the most harmful form of visible light for your eyes, is everywhere. You can find it outside on a sunny day, in your LED lights, and most importantly, on your screens. In the short term, blue light can create digital eye strain. If you are a part of the 65% of American adults experiencing digital eye strain, you may be experiencing tired eyes, blurred vision, headaches, a sore neck, or difficulty concentrating.

Most laptops and phones have a setting to help you filter out blue light, but they usually give your laptop a warm, yellow tint. Instead, try the JINS SCREEN glasses that you can wear regularly which will not make you see yellow. You can also add JINS SCREEN lenses to any JINS glasses.

2. ADD LUTEIN TO YOUR DIET

It may sound shocking, but your diet plays an important role in strengthening and maintaining your vision. In order to work at full capacity, your eyes need healthy doses of several key vitamins and minerals.

Lutein is the last line of defense before harmful blue light or UV waves can damage your macula, the central region of your retina. Your body does not reproduce lutein, so it is incredibly important to make sure that you are consuming enough of the antioxidant on a daily basis. Lutein can be found in the following foods:

  • Spinach
  • Bananas
  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Carrots
  • Eggs

That being said, the most efficient way to consume lutein is through a supplement – or you would have to eat over two bowls of raw spinach every day to get the recommended dose.

3. DO EYE EXERCISES

While exercise is important to your general health, eye exercises can actually maintain or improve your eye health over time. Below are 3 easy eye exercises that you can do every day.

Palming: Rub the palms of your hands until they are warm and place them under your eyelids.

Blinking: Quickly blink 10-15 times and then relax your eyes for 20 seconds. Repeat 4 times.

20-20-20: For every 20 minutes you spend on the computer, spend 20 seconds looking at an object which is 20+ feet away.

Note that eye exercises are only helpful in certain instances. Particularly, eye exercises will not fix astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, glaucoma, or macular degeneration. However, these exercises can relieve eye stress and improve your overall eye health over time.

4. PROTECT YOUR EYES WITH SUNGLASSES

When you are outside, sunglasses are incredibly important to help prevent macular degeneration and astigmatism. Sunglasses also help to prevent cataracts, since 20 percent of cataract cases are caused by extended UV exposure. The National Eye Institute recommends sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB radiation. Thankfully, all JINS sunglasses come with 99.9%+ UV Coating. 5. REGULARLY VISIT AN EYE DOCTOR

Sometimes, our eyes encounter problems that cannot be fixed through eye exercises, UV protection or diet alone. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for more serious eye conditions. In these instances, it may be best to schedule a yearly eye exam and visit an eye care professional. In the meantime, there are ways to ensure that your eyes remain as healthy as possible.
